20 Week Scan (Morphology Scan)

Well we are 20 weeks into our pregnancy, half way! It really doesn’t seem that long although some people tell me the second half takes a lot longer or at least it seems that way.

At the 20 week stage you routinely have an ultrasound scan to check on the physical development of the baby. We have had all our ultrasounds done at the Wesley Fetal Medicine Unit in Brisbane which is a private clinic. Being a private clinic I think they are dotting their I’s and crossing their T’s a bit more than a public clinic would do, as part of their 20 week scanning procedure is to have a second sonographer double check the babies developmental features as well as every scan includes a DVD of the scan and 3d images.
I’m happy to report that everything is progressing perfectly with a really strong perfectly formed heart, kidneys, spine and lips plus everything else they checked.

The baby's feet measure 36mm at this point and its head is 50mm in diameter. The baby's length can no longer be measured as it longer than the width of the scanner, but judging by the length of the feet, legs, arms etc this babies appears to be 10 days in advance of where it should be. So in other words its either going to be a big baby or come a little bit earlier.

Anyways I have included a few of the 2d and 3d images from the scan.

You can see in the photo below the baby is already starting to practice holding a steering wheel ready for its F1 career : )BABY_16

In the photo below you can see the baby’s big foot, all 36mm.BABY_19

The photo below shows 4 fingers with a thumb hiding behind ths index finger.BABY_26

We’ve decided to have non diagnostic 3/4d scan done in 7 weeks time where we should get some much nicer images as the baby should have some fat on it by then rather than being all skin and bones as it is now.
